Skunk Removal

Skunk Removal

The web is full of information on skunk removal. I am here to tell you some real information about the subject. I have realized many people do not want to know how to do skunk removal and others canít afford to take care of skunks living under their homes or decks. So this is for those who want to know how to remove skunks from a professionalís point of view.

Important Legal Skunk Removal Information:

There are some legal matters that must be discussed before performing skunk removal. In many states there are laws in place on skunk trapping. For example in the state of Michigan it is illegal to transport a rabies vector animal without proper permits. So if you were to catch a skunk on your property you canít take it to the woods down the road and release the animal unless it is on your property. The law states in Michigan you can remove a skunk doing damage or about to do damage on your property without a permit but you must either release the skunk on your property or euthanize the skunk in accordance with humane methods. I would not recommend shooting the animal in the trap because it will spray in most cases. Also do not drown the skunk; this is not a humane method. Lethal injection or a CO2 chamber is also a humane method in accordance with the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association). Most people do not have this type of equipment around their home thus a good reason to hire a professional. If you are unsure about laws on skunk removal check with local state laws through the DNR to make sure you are not breaking the law.

Determine the location that you are trapping:

Placement of the trap is crucial for success.  If you are trapping skunks from under the home and you have a single hole then place the trap right at the hole to make the best attempt for the skunk to find the trap. Use fencing to corral the skunk towards the trap. Fencing is a way to keep the skunk within the area of the trap opening and not allowing the skunk to wander; this will ensure a quicker skunk removal.

Proper skunk trap selection:

A skunk trap or a raccoon size trap is a good selection for skunk removal. Make sure the trap is covered before the trap is set. This will put the captured skunk out of the elements and it will put the skunk at ease for transportation. It will also help prevent from being sprayed.

I would not recommend any foot hold traps or conibear style traps for skunk removal. They will catch the skunk but the animal will be stressed and potentially could spray. Since these traps are placed on the ground non target animals may be captured and if a conibear is used then the non target animal will be killed or the skunk will most likely spray if not set properly.

Bait selection:

Baits or lures are used to capture the skunkís interest to bring the skunk to the trap thus allowing the skunk to be captured. We are not out to capture all animals in the area so skunk specific type baits and lures should be use to allow best attempt to capture the nuisance skunk and not all the neighborhood skunks, cats and raccoons. My favorite bait to use for skunk removal is Rosebud and SKB, with a trailer of mini marshmallows.

How to complete:

The completion of the skunk removal job will be to exclude the area the skunk is using as a den site this will be explained here for skunk exclusion.

Positive set where trap is located directly over opening.
